Baltimore is a city of great neighborhoods with unique characteristics, cultures, and amenities. Baltimore is also one of American most historic cities with 72 historic districts including over 57,000 historic structures.
After incorporating in 1797, Baltimore quickly grew to one of the largest cities in America, ranking third in population by 1830. Baltimore’s port location and commerce encouraged its continual expansion and the creation of new neighborhoods, each with their own distinctive characteristics. Through the mid-20th century, Baltimore remained among America’s ten largest cities, and at present Baltimore has more properties in designated historic districts than any other city in the country.
