During the War of 1812, the British declared Baltimore a nest of pirates and commanded its mighty military to burn Charm City to the ground. The specific ire of the King’s rage was Fells Point. The Fells Point shipyards were churning out clipper ships, the fastest, most maneuverable ships of the time. One-hundred and twenty-six privateers operating out of Baltimore captured over 500 British vessels. Captain Thomas Boyle boasted that England herself was “under a state of strict and rigorous blockade.”
Today, Fells Point retains the lively energy of commerce and a working harbor. The Broadway Market, established in 1784, remains adjacent to a smorgasbord of unique places to eat, drink, and shop. Fells Point is a fifteen minute walk from downtown along the waterfront promenade or five minutes by water taxi. New condominiums and apartments have sprouted up next to the historic, federal style rowhouses that distinguish the area.
Jubilee in Fells Point
Jubilee, with its partner, the Polish National Alliance Council 21, developed the twenty apartments of PNA Senior Housing located in a parochial school, half a block from the neighborhood’s shopping district. The PNA maintains a cozy lounge on the first floor available to all residents and the community room is one of the city’s grandest ballrooms.
